BECOMING A BETTER TEEN DRIVER PROGRAM

Dear Interested teen driver and parent,

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office is offering a teen defensive driving program. This is the only program of its kind offered by a sheriff’s office in the state. The goal of the program is not to replace the driver’s education program or to teach you to drive “like a cop”. The purpose of the program is to teach you basic defensive and safe driving techniques. You will learn about vehicle dynamics, the importance of vehicle maintenance and how the laws of physics affect driving.

This program consists of a short lecture followed by actual driving under the supervision of highly skilled and trained law enforcement driving instructors. You will learn proper and defensive driving techniques beyond those taught during Driver’s Education. The cost of the program is $20.00, which helps cover the use of Randolph Community College Emergency Services Training Facility and vehicle maintenance.  Vehicles will be provided for use during the training program. Participants WILL NOT be driving their own vehicle.

We want this to be a fun learning experience for teens. We hope that they take away skills that they will continue to use into adulthood.  We also hope that new lifelong friends are made in the process.

To be eligible to participate you must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a resident of Randolph County
  • Must be between the ages of 16 and 18
  • Must have a valid North Carolina Driver’s License (a limited provisional license is acceptable however, a learners permit is not)

  • Must be able to attend the entirety of the scheduled hours for the course
  • Must not have any pending charges for a Felony or serious Misdemeanor
