On October 27, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Creekway Ridge, Asheboro, in reference to a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, the deputy observed a small wound on the victim’s leg that appeared to be from shrapnel. The victim advised a male subject arrived at the residence to buy some items listed for sale. The male began firing shots at him and the victim returned fire with a shotgun. Deputies located approximately seven bullet holes in the side of the house and one shotgun shell casing lying on the ground to the left of the steps. The victim advised that the suspect had fled the scene in a black SUV striking the concrete well cap and damaging it.
Additional deputies responded to Staleys Farm Rd., Asheboro due to Randolph Communications relaying information that Robert Allen Beane, Jr., had called in to advised that he was involved in the incident on Creekway Ridge and was heading to a residence on Staleys Farm Rd. Upon arrival, deputies located the black vehicle parked in the driveway and a white male. The male laid a firearm on a vehicle and surrendered himself.
The Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Investigations responded to both locations to further investigate and collect evidence. Detectives took custody of Beane at the Staleys Farm Rd. residence for transport to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office for questioning.
Following the investigation, Beane was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for charges of felony discharge weapon into an occupied dwelling and misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon. No bond was given due to the Pre-Trial Integrity Act. A first appearance was set for October 30, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
The magistrate also found probable cause for charges against the victim, identified as Michael Lee Russell for felony discharging weapon into a moving vehicle and misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon and issued a warrant for his arrest.
On November 5, 2023, Russell was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where he was served the warrant and ordered to remain in custody until his court date on November 6, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
