On January 19, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on Flint Hill Rd., Sophia, but the vehicle failed to stop and a chase ensued. The driver continued to increase speed and pass multiple vehicles on a double yellow line. As the suspect approached the intersection of Flint Hill Rd. and Earnhardt Rd, the suspect attempted to pass a third vehicle on a double yellow line that was in the process of turning right on Earnhardt Rd., and while attempting to go around the vehicle, the suspect lost control and went off the right side of the road on Earnhardt Rd. into the ditch. The driver, identified as Steven Dale Bryant, was taken into custody. During a subsequent search, drug paraphernalia was located. He was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for felony fleeing to elude arrest, misdemeanor driving while license revoked, misdemeanor speeding 90 mph in a posted 45 mph zone, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor driving with no insurance, failure to burn headlamp while operating a motorcycle, unsafe tires, unsafe passing over a double yellow line, driving left of center and passing a vehicle, no motorcycle endorsement, and driving with no NC registration plate displayed. Bryant was given a secured bond of $2,000 and a first appearance was set for January 22, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
