On June 5, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Highway Interdiction Team attempted to initiate a traffic stop on I-85 N. in Archdale, however, the driver refused to stop. A short pursuit ensued and the suspect vehicle came to a stop on NC Hwy 62. Both the driver and passenger exited the vehicle and were taken into custody. A strong odor of marijuana was detected coming from within the vehicle and during a subsequent search, marijuana was located. The driver was identified as Isiah Malique Starnes-Johnson and the passenger was identified as Julian Leonjei Nelson. During the investigation, it was confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen.
Nelson was cited for misdemeanor possession of marijuana up to ½ oz. and given a court date of July 1, 2024, in Randolph County District Court and was released.
Starnes-Johnson was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for felony possession of stolen motor vehicle, felony flee to elude arrest with motor vehicle, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana up to ½ oz. He was issued a $15,000 secured bond. A first appearance was set for June 7, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
