On June 30, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to I-73/74 in reference to a welfare check. Once out with the vehicle, it was apparent the vehicle had been abandoned due to being broken down. A male subject had been seen walking north on the highway towards Asheboro and they were able to go back and make contact with the individual, identified as Maurice Laval Williams, Jr. He stated he’d just recently bought the vehicle and had the title in his possession. During an initial search of Williams for officer safety, deputies located a firearm. The firearm came back reported stolen out of Greensboro. Williams was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, where the magistrate found probable cause for felony possession of a stolen firearm. The magistrate issued a $1,500 secured bond and a first appearance was set for July 1, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
