On November 29, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on NC Hwy 62, Trinity. The driver was identified as Paul Wayne Tillman. During the investigation, it was discovered that Tillman's license had been suspended and he was on probation. He was issued a citation for driving while license revoked, no liability insurance, and a fictitious tag. The tag was seized and he was advised that the vehicle would be towed. During a subsequent search for towing, narcotics and paraphernalia were located. Tillman was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for felony possession of Schedule II controlled substance, felony possession of methamphetamine, felony possession of heroin, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Tillman was issued a $10,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for December 2, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
