On June 3, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a small black SUV traveling east bound on US Hwy 64 E. at a high rate of speed, traveling on the wrong side of the road. A deputy in the area of Crestwick Rd. and US Highway 64 E. witnessed a black SUV in the center-turning lane, passing vehicles in a no passing area traveling at a high rate of speed. The deputy began to follow the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The driver did not stop and a vehicle pursuit ensued, extending into Chatham County.
After entering the city limits of Siler City, the suspect vehicle ran several red lights and continued passing other vehicles using the opposite lanes of travel causing the other motorist to take evasive action to avoid a collision. Shortly after leaving the city limits, two Chatham County Deputies joined in along with additional units from Randolph County Sheriff Office. Chatham County advised they had positioned additional deputy to deploy a tire deflation device. The suspect vehicle saw the device and swerved into the grass median in an attempt to avoid them, but struck the spike strip with the right-side tires of the vehicle. The vehicle proceeded on US Highway 64 E. with the front right tire deflating and therefore slowed down. Deputies were able to box in the vehicle with their patrol vehicles. The suspect tried to go into the grass median to avoid deputies, losing control and striking the cable median barrier. The suspect jumped out of the driver's side window of his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended and taken into custody by a Randolph County deputy. EMS responded to evaluate and subsequently transported suspect, identified as Timothy Wayne Harris, Jr., to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital for evaluation.
The charging deputy went in front of the magistrate to file charges for felony flee to elude arrest with motor vehicle, felony assault with a deadly weapon on government official, no operator’s license, speeding, reckless driving, unsafe passing yellow line, fail to stop at red light. The magistrate found probable cause and warrants were issued.
On June 9, 2023, Harris, reported to the Randolph County Detention Center to turn himself in. He was served his warrant and the magistrate issued a $10,000 secured bond with a first appearance set for June 12, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
