On June 5, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded with Randolph County Animal Services to Little Beane Store Road in Seagrove, to a reported animal cruelty incident.
Randolph County Crime Scene Investigation and Criminal Investigations responded to collect evidence. During the investigation, detectives identified Keontai Javon McKenzie as a suspect. Randolph County Animal Services seized the dogs on the property as a result of the joint investigation.
Following the investigation, charges were sought against McKenzie for felony kill animal by starvation and five counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals. The magistrate found probable cause and issued the warrant.
On July 20, 2023, McKenzie was located by the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Apprehension Team, arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where he was served his outstanding warrants. He received a $5,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for July 21, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
