On August 31, 2023, a Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Deputy patrolling the area of US Hwy 220 S, Asheboro, was outside the business and speaking with a citizen when the station attendant advised that a male subject was locked inside the bathroom with unknown circumstances. The deputy and others attempted to gain entry as the clerk went to try to locate the key. A female, who was later identified as Amy Ledwell Rivera, stated that it was her friend inside of the bathroom and that he had possibly overdosed on heroin. Communications was advised to have fire and EMS respond emergency traffic in reference the situation. The station attendant was able to locate the key and unlock the door. The deputy located an unconscious male subject but was able to wake him. EMS arrived and rendered aid to the male.
Additional deputies responded and a consensual search of the vehicle in which they were traveling was conducted. During the search, deputies located Methamphetamine and paraphernalia in Rivera’s belongings. She was placed under arrest and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for felony possession of methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. She received a secured bond of $2,500 and a first appearance was set for September 1, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
