On March 3, 2025, a Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted a traffic stop on West Dixie Drive in Asheboro. The driver initially gave a turn signal, but accelerated rapidly across two lanes of traffic in the opposite direction, entering the parking lot of the BP gas station and proceeding through the parking lot behind the building onto Albemarle Road and headed toward Park St. The vehicle turned right onto Park St., failed to stop for the traffic and left the right side of the roadway, proceeded through street-side parking, and entered the sidewalk directly in front of the State Employee's Credit Union located at 1036 S Park St, Asheboro, barely missing a pedestrian while attempting to continue fleeing the scene. The vehicle slowed to almost a stop as it struck the passenger side rear wheel area of a parked unoccupied car.
Due to the driver's wanton disregard for the motoring public and pedestrians, the deputy and an assisting patrol supervisor utilized a forced motor vehicle maneuver to stop the vehicle. Two males exited the passenger side of the vehicle and attempted to flee but complied with commands to stop. They were detained and released following the investigation. The female driver identified herself as Cami Elizabeth Utley, who had multiple warrants and orders for arrest including felony interfering with electronic monitoring device and felony probation violations.
Other units from the Sheriff's Office and Asheboro Police Department arrived to assist. Inside the vehicle, multiple drug paraphernalia items were located along with methamphetamine. During the search of Utley, a concealed weapon was located. Utley was transported to Randolph Hospital for evaluation and was released shortly after. Charges were sought against Utley for felony flee/elude arrest, felony possession of methamphetamine, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon, misdemeanor reckless driving to endanger, misdemeanor driving while license revoked -impaired revoked, driving left of center, and exceeding the posted speed limit. The magistrate found probable cause and issued a magistrate order. Upon her release, she was transported to the Detention Center where she was served the outstanding warrants and the magistrate's orders. Utley was given no bond on the magistrate order and a combined bond of $200,000 on all other outstanding processes. A first appearance was set for March 4, 2025, in Randolph County District Court.
