On February 17, 2021, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received a report of fraud. The victim stated that someone had stolen checks from an old checkbook on a closed account. The victim was unaware until being notified by a recovery agency that the checks were cashed and returned to a recovery service as insufficient funds.
Following an investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division, charges were sought with a magistrate on April 14, 2021. The magistrate found probable cause to issue warrants for John Robert Ferrell for five counts felony identity theft, two counts felony forgery of instrument, five counts misdemeanor worthless check closed account, and five counts misdemeanor obtain property with a worthless check.
On June 9, 2022, Ferrell was located, arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where he was served the outstanding warrants and received a $50,000 secured bond. He was also served his outstanding order for arrest for failure to appear on a felony and two orders for arrest for felony probation violation-out of county and received a $350,000 secured bond.
A first appearance was set for June 9, 2022, in Randolph County District Court.
