On November 23, 2025, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on Interstate Highway 73/74 South near the rest area. Upon a passenger side approach, a strong odor of marijuana was detected and emitting from within the vehicle.
An additional deputy responded to assist. The driver was notified that a probable cause search would be conducted, prompting him to exit the vehicle. The passenger, later identified as Alfred Cagle Jr., refusing several commands to exit the vehicle, was assisted out and arrested for non-compliance. During the search, marijuana was located. The driver was released.
Cagle was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, where upon arrival, a strong odor of marijuana was still noticeable coming from Mr. Cagle. During the booking process, additional marijuana was found concealed on Cagle. The magistrate found probable cause for felony possession of a controlled substance in the jail, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, misdemeanor resist a public officer, two counts of misdemeanor communicating threats, and he was also served with an outstanding failure to appear on felony possession of Marijuana and felony maintain a vehicle for the purpose of a controlled substance. He was given no bond due to the pretrial integrity act. A first appearance was set for November 24, 2025, in Randolph County District Court.
