On July 31, 2022, a Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Deputy observed a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction stop abruptly, pull off the side of the roadway and turned off its headlights on Hwy 22/42 just South of Log Cabin Rd. in Bennett. The deputy turned around and proceeded towards the vehicle to pull up behind it and check the welfare of the driver. Upon approach to the driver's side of the vehicle the parking lights were still on, and no one was sitting inside the vehicle. An additional deputy responded to assist. They located a shoe in the side ditch near the vehicle and eventually located the male subject laying in the woods hiding. He was escorted back to the roadway and identified as Willie Douglas Johnson, who had a warrant out of Orange County for failure to appear. During the search to arrest, methamphetamine and marijuana were located. He was transported to the magistrate's office, who found probable cause for the charges of felony possession of methamphetamine, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Johnson was issued a $1,000 secured bond for these charges and $1,000 for the failure to appear warrant. A first appearance was set for July 29, 2022, in Randolph County District Court. He was then transported to the Randolph County Detention Center for processing.
