Gregory Antonio Coffin, a registered sex offender in Randolph County, was mailed a sex offender address verification letter from the NC SBI, Raleigh, on August 10, 2021. The letter was delivered by the United States Postal Service on August 12, 2021. Multiple times Coffin reported that he was coming to the office, but did not. On October 8, 2021, the magistrate found probable cause to issue a warrant for failure to return verification notice. Deputies made multiple attempts to locate him at the address given. Another address verification letter was sent on February 8, 2022, and the post office reported it was picked up by an individual on February 17, 2022. Several attempts were made by the Criminal Apprehension Team to serve Coffin on the previous warrant. As of May 20, 2022, Coffin had not returned his second verification letter to the Randolph County Sheriff's Office. The Registry Detective went before the magistrate, who found probable cause and issued the second warrant for arrest for felony failure to return verification letter.
On August 30, 2022, at 5:30 pm, Coffin was located by the Criminal Apprehension Team on Old NC Hwy 13, Asheboro. He was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center and taken before the magistrate where he was served the outstanding warrants and issued a $10,000 secured bond.
