On October 9, 2022, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to High Point St., Randleman in regards to an armed robbery that had occurred on Interstate 73/74 in Randleman. Upon arrival, the victim had obvious injuries and reported that he was letting a “friend” drive his vehicle that he had recently bought; the caller was an occupant in the vehicle. The male driver, later identified as James David Marler, pulled the car to the shoulder of the road and robbed the victim at knife point. Marler assaulted the victim as he was emptying his pockets. Marler then ordered the victim out of the car and drove away in the victim’s vehicle heading northbound on I-73 toward Greensboro.
Criminal Investigations Detectives made contact with Guilford County Sheriff’s Office for an agency assist. Shortly thereafter, they located the vehicle in a parking lot of a hotel in their jurisdiction and subsequently located Marler who was occupying a room there.
Marler was arrested by the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office on a Randolph County warrant for felony robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony larceny of a motor vehicle, felony possession of stolen goods/property, and misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon. Marler was transported to the Guilford County Detention Center and received a $20,000 secured bond in this incident. He was issued a court date of November 17, 2022, in Randolph County District Court.
