On November 3, 2022, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Low Bridge Rd., Liberty, in reference to a welfare check of children following a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, deputies activated emergency lighting on their vehicles and announced themselves as law enforcement. A female, identified as Melisa Ann Herriott, opened the front door of the residence and simultaneously pointed a handgun directly at one of the deputies and in the general direction of the other. Deputies were able to de-escalate the situation but the resident closed the door. The deputies again attempted to get the resident to the door. Herriott again opened the door but was confrontational and uncooperative.
The patrol supervisor arrived on-scene to assist with the call and was able to de-escalate the situation and gain access to the home and perform a welfare check on the children at the residence who were found safe.
Upon further investigation, the patrol supervisor sought charges againt Herriott for two counts Felony Assault Law Enforcement Officer with Firearm, two counts Misdemeanor Assault by Pointing a Gun and Misdemeanor Misuse of 911. She was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate issued a $50,000 secured bond and scheduled a first appearance for November 7, 2022, in Randolph County District Court.
