On June 16, 2022, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Kidds Mill Rd, Franklinville, in reference to fraud. The victim reported multiple transactions on a checking account. During the investigation by the Randolph County Criminal Investigations Division, it was determined that Crystal Burchett Powell, who is known by the victim, had obtained the victim’s debit card information on June 14, 2022, and transferred funds to her Cashapp account. Funds were also transferred to Samuel Vernon Groves, an acquaintance of Powell.
On October 5, following the investigation, the magistrate found probable cause to issue charges for both subjects for felony identity theft and felony obtaining property by false pretense.
On November 9, 2022, Groves was located, arrested and transported to the Alamance County Detention Center where he was served his outstanding warrant and issued a $2,500 secured bond. A first appearance was set for November 14, 2022, in Randolph County District Court.
