On February 25, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Foggy Mountain Rd., Asheboro, in reference to larceny of a motor vehicle. The victim advised when he arrived home, he realized his truck was gone from the residence. Upon checking his residence, he discovered it had been broken into and additional items were missing from inside the residence. The suspect was identified as Steven Wayne Golden. Criminal Investigations was notified of the incident for further investigation and evidence was collected.
On February 26, 2023, a Patrol Deputy located the stolen vehicle off of Staleys Farm Rd., Asheboro, behind a vacant house. This property was near a residence in which Golden had been residing on Topaz Rd. Deputies went to the residence on Topaz Rd. to investigate further and search for Golden. Deputies were allowed to search the room where Golden had been staying, but he was not located. They did recover some items stolen from the February 25th incident.
Deputies and detectives searched the property on Staley’s Farm Rd. where the vehicle was located and recovered items stolen from the February 25th incident. Golden was not located at the time.
Charges were sought against Golden on February 27, 2023, for seven counts felony larceny of a firearm, seven counts felony possession stolen firearm, felony breaking and entering, felony larceny of motor vehicle, felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle, misdemeanor larceny, and misdemeanor possession of stolen goods/property.
On March 3, 2023, Deputies observed Golden on a bicycle on Staleys Farm Rd. over the Zoo Connector and attempted to make contact with him. Golden attempted to flee on the bicycle travelling a short distance before crashing into the guardrail on the bridge. Golden then fled on foot into a wooded area. Additional deputies arrived and set up a perimeter on the area and initiated a search. K9 Ziva and her handler located Golden hiding in a wooded area between US Hwy 64 and the Zoo Connector exit where he was last seen entering. Upon apprehension, Golden was found in possession of illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia. Following the investigation, he was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for charges of felony possession cocaine, misdemeanor resisting public officer, misdemeanor simple possession schedule II, misdemeanor simple possession schedule III, misdemeanor possession marijuana up to 1/2 oz., and misdemeanor possession drug paraphernalia. For these charges, Golden received a $5,000 secured bond.
He was also served the outstanding warrants issued on February 27th. He was issued a $50,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for March 6, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
