[ARCHIVED] Prescription Take Back Day

prescription take back day

Prescription drug misuse has taken a heartbreaking toll on too many Americans and their families. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers the misuse of opioid medications an epidemic. Proper disposal of expired, unused and unneeded medications from the home is an important element of a strategy for promoting public health and safety. The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office and Safe Kids Randolph County are hosting a Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 19, 2023, to allow individuals to just drive through the parking lot and dispose of prescription drugs that could be diverted or misused. Safe Kids Randolph County will distribute medicine lock boxes during the event, while supplies last. The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office is located at 727 McDowell Road in Asheboro.

Each day, approximately 2,500 teenagers use prescription drugs to get high for the first time.  "Anything we can do to keep potentially dangerous prescription drugs out of the wrong hands is a win for the community," said Sheriff Greg Seabolt.

On other days, a Med Drop collection box is available in the first floor elevator entrance of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office. The box is designed for people to drop off their expired and/or no longer need a medication. Citizens can drop off the prescription drugs Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, with no questions asked and no paperwork to fill out. The prescription drop box is for prescription drugs only. The Sheriff’s Office cannot allow any syringes or liquids to be dropped off in the drug drop box.

The Prescription Drug Take Back Day and the Med Drop box give people the ability and opportunity to properly and safely dispose of the prescription drugs and assure that they do not get in the wrong hands and away from our water and landfills.
