On April 11, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Old NC Hwy 13, Asheboro, regarding a theft. The victim reported giving a male subject a ride from Foxworth Rd., Asheboro, to the area of Brewer St., in Asheboro, and during the transport, the subject had taken the victim’s phone. The victim reported that he had picked up the male subject near a red truck that was pulling a trailer, and that the truck had been involved in an accident.
Upon investigation, deputies determined that the truck was possibly a vehicle that was stolen from Ramseur city limits earlier the same day. Deputies located the vehicle on Foxworth Road and confirmed it as the stolen vehicle. Ramseur Police Department advised that Walter Dion Cheek had been identified as the suspect in the vehicle theft. Cheek also fit the description given by the victim in this investigation.
With assistance from Asheboro Police Department. Deputies located and arrested Cheek on Brewer Street in Asheboro. During a subsequent search, the stolen phone was located. Cheek was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, where the magistrate found probable cause for charges of felony larceny and felony possession of stolen goods. He was issued a $20,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for April 12, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
