On April 17, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Caraway Mtn. Rd., Sophia, in reference to a larceny. Upon arrival, the victim advised a four wheeler ATV had been taken from the property. Information and evidence was collected for further investigation.
On April 18, 2023, a Criminal Investigations Detective and a Patrol Deputy followed up on information gathered regarding the possible location of the ATV and a suspect. They responded to the area of Cameron Circle where the suspect was believed to be located. During the investigation it was discovered that Jonathan Charles Toomes had arrived the prior night on an ATV matching the description of the one stolen, and he was still at the residence. Additional deputies responded to assist. On the consent of the homeowner, entry was made into the home and Toomes was located hiding in a closet. Toomes was taken into custody.
A search of the area was conducted, locating the ATV in a wooded area off Hoover Hill Road. Once recovered, the victim was notified and responded to collect the ATV.
Toomes was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate heard the facts of the case and issued a warrant for felony possession of stolen goods. He was issued a $15,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for April 19, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
He was also served an outstanding warrant out of Guilford County for misdemeanor assault on a female and misdemeanor injury to personal property. Due to the charges being domestic in nature, bond was denied.
