On April 10, 2022, a Randolph County Sheriff’s Office deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling westbound on Presnell St. Asheboro Police Department responded to assist with the stop. During a subsequent search, marijuana was located. The passenger, identified as Benson Ali Brower, is a convicted felon and was found in possession of a concealed handgun. Brower was placed under arrest for felony possession of a firearm by a felon, misdemeanor carrying a concealed gun, and Resist/Delay/Obstruct.
The driver was issued a citation for not having a registration plate displayed on the vehicle and possession of marijuana.
Brower was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center. Prior to entry, Brower was warned again about having illegal contraband on his person and if it was brought into the facility he could be charged with a felony. Brower advised he had additional substances in his possession. During the search in the booking area, approximately 12 grams of Oxycodone and a large amount of US currency was located. The magistrate found probable cause for the charges of felony possession of a firearm by a felon, felony trafficking opium, misdemeanor carrying a concealed gun, and Resist/Delay/Obstruct. He was given a $25,000 secured bond and a first appearance is scheduled for April 11, 2022, in Randolph County District Court.
